"SOLDIER ARMED WITH 2 LARGE BOWIE KNIVES. 1/9th -plate ferrotype housed in case w/ mat, glass, & preserver. Image is crystal clear showing private William Harris, 21st North Carolina Infantry in NC issue uniform & cap defiantly facing camera holding 2 very large Confederate clip point bowie knives, clear enough to tell they were well-made. North Carolina made many of the finest Southern knives and both are wonderful examples of Confederate bowies. This image was recently purchased in NC tag sale along w/ several other photos from same family & several religious tracts, all accompany. One image is daguerreotype of William and his sister with inked old family ID. William Archer Harris from Madison, Rockingham County, NC (1829-1908) enlisted June 3, 1861 into company "L", 21st NC Infantry, "Rockingham Invinciblesā€. He does have that "invincibleā€ look holding 2 massive bowies. This is the only image known of Confederate holding 2 bowies I am aware, & I have photographed over 100 images for my Confederate bowie book. The 21st took part in all major battles of Army of Northern Virginia, having over 450 casualties at Gettysburg alone. William went through Virginia campaigns unscathed, but was shot in detached service in NC, May 15, 1864, recovered & would be with Joseph E. Johnston till the end, paroled Greensboro, NC near his home, April 15, 1864."
