Shaler Three Piece Bullet

Shaler Three Piece Bullet with strong condition and eye appeal.  If you use the book “CIVIL WAR PROJECTILES II” by W. Reid McKee & M.E. Mason, Jr. this bullet is on page 61.  I believe this bullet to be MM# 520.  I did not measure or weigh the bullet.  It could be one of the other examples on each side of it.  The Shaler Three Piece Bullet is the most common multi piece bullet.  Any Civil War multi piece bullet is rare and scarce.  The Shaler Three Piece Bullet was invented by Reuben Shaler.  It was patented on August 12, 1862.  It was intended to compensate for errors in range.  The bullet was designed to have a greater vertical spread.  The Shaler Three Piece Bullet was successful.  The only fly in the buttermilk was the paper cartridge.  It was bulky and easily damaged in combat.  The book mentions a four piece Shaler Bullet.  I have never seen one of them.  These are cool Civil War Bullets and every collection should have one.  If you in need of a Shaler Three Piece Bullet Rebel Yell.
